About Us

Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar National Memorial has a total plot area of 10,400 square meters. The building houses a theater, multi-purpose hall, library, museum, bank hall, dining room, kitchen, conference hall, rest rooms, various seminar halls, and additional rooms above the theater.

The hall is open to tourists, students, citizens, and government officials. Consequently, a large number of foreign tourists, ministers, and government officials visit the memorial regularly. A residential meditation center is also located within the memorial.

To commemorate the golden jubilee of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's efforts for human liberation, which included burning the Manusmriti at Chavdar Tale in Mahad city on March 20, 1927 and opening water tanks for drinking on December 25, 1927, the construction of a memorial was announced on April 14, 1998, Dr. Ambedkar's birth anniversary. The Social Justice and Special Assistance Department laid the foundation for the memorial on the same day. This memorial serves as an enduring tribute to the architect of Dalit rights, unity, and modern India.

The city of Mahad holds unique historical significance, particularly due to the Satyagraha at Chavdar Talya led by the great Mahanav Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Tourists from both India and abroad visit this historic site to pay their respects.

To guide these tourists and showcase the life and work of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the Government of Maharashtra constructed a grand national monument in the heart of Mahad city. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar National Memorial took place on April 14, 1998, Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's birth anniversary, at the hands of the Honorable Chief Minister Manohar Joshi. The building was inaugurated on August 10, 2004, by the Honorable Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, with the blessings of N. Shivajirao Moghe.

This building is primarily divided into four sections: a theater, a museum, a library, a business complex, and a swimming pool. The estimated cost of the Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar National Memorial is Rs. 17 crores.

Proposed Activities

  • Skill Development Center: Establish a unique skill development training center at Mahad for large-scale skill development programs. Collaborate with the industrial center in Konkan Patta to develop specific skill programs based on local industry needs. Partner with relevant training institutes by providing space and conducting skill development programs for Scheduled Caste students.

  • Coaching Classes: Initiate large-scale coaching classes for students in Mahad and surrounding areas, covering classes from primary school to post-graduation.

  • Bank Clerical Coaching: Start coaching classes for bank clerical examinations.

  • Ambedkar Movement Archives: Compile all materials related to the Ambedkar movement, including books, photographs, and articles.

  • Library Development: Enhance the library by acquiring books, bibliographies, and computerizing its catalog.

  • Object Museum: Develop an object museum.

  • Catering Services: Utilize the services of women's NGOs from Scheduled Castes to provide snacks and meals to trainees.

  • Mahad Smarak Utilization: Optimize the use of facilities at the Mahad Smarak to generate revenue. Advertise and promote the facility to the public.

  • Ambedkar Memorabilia Collection: Gather Babasaheb Ambedkar's handwritten letters, photocopies, and other related materials from across the country. Encourage public contributions of photographs, audio-visuals, and objects related to Dr. Ambedkar's life through newspaper advertisements.

  • Leadership Development Workshops: Conduct two-day workshops or seminars for various levels of Scheduled Caste professionals, including government officers, lawyers, doctors, engineers, judges, public representatives, industrialists, entrepreneurs, and professors. Organize a grand event commemorating the 100th anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's journey to Columbia University, New York.
